Philanthropy and Scholarship

Philanthropy

Alpha Chi Omega has adopted the support of victims of domestic violence as a national altruistic project. All members, collegiate and alumnae, provide service in their community to local shelters or organizations that aid victims of domestic violence. The emphasis of this project is to offer members’ time and energy to women, children, and organizations in need. Last year, collegiate chapters raised over $300,000.00 for their local domestic violence shelters and programs.

Our Alpha Chi Omega chapter at the University of California, Santa Barbara is committed to the elimination of domestic violence as well as increasing the awareness of the issue. The Delta Psi chapter at UCSB holds an annual billiards tournament in downtown Santa Barbara. It is an all day long billiards competition amongst all the fraternities and sororities aimed at raising funds to donate to Domestic Violence Solutions, the local battered women's shelter. Over the past year, our chapter has been working with this shelter in many different ways to show our continuous support. We send gifts for the holidays, donations and other supplies such as clothing and canned food. The chapter feels it is important for our members to be aware of the domestic violence issue and ways of prevention. We keep our members informed by holding annual risk management presentations on domestic violence and other related issues. The girls have been incredibly hard working and successful in their community service efforts to raise awareness and support for the issue.

Scholarship

Academic interest is one of the five criteria of Alpha Chi Omega nationally and is a top priority in our chapter. House study hours and tutoring are available to all members, as well as other programs that help us to be successful academically. Each week we host open library hours as an opportunity to encourage sisters to study together.

Students who take advantage of the academic support available and properly balance their time between academic and extra-curricular pursuits will find that Greek membership can enhance their academic performance. Several national studies have consistently found that retention rates are significantly higher for fraternity and sorority members than for unaffiliated students.
